There is increasing evidence that some Black Mississippians are being disproportionately affected by health issues. Inequities in the social determinants of health, such as poverty and healthcare access, affecting these groups are interrelated and influence a wide range of health and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. Factors affecting health disparities in the state include discrimination, health care access and utilization, occupation, education, income, and wealth gaps, and housing. The MS Commission on Health Equity works to create a community-based response plan to provide equitable access to health resources, including a referral system to facilitate access to resources.
