IMPROVING MATERNAL HEALTH
IN THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA
The RMOMS program aims to address rising maternal mortality, limited obstetric services, and health disparities in rural areas.

Rural Maternity And OB Management Strategies
We are proud of the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health's affiliation with RMOMS. Our mission is to establish a cohesive and enduring framework for maternal and obstetric care in rural/underserved areas in Mississippi. Through our program, we aim to improve accessibility to superior prenatal and obstetric services, safeguarding the health and welfare of mothers and infants throughout the Mississippi Delta region.

Why Was RMOMS Created?
Rural mothers have more trouble getting care:
- More than half of all rural U.S. counties lack hospital obstetric services.
- Closures are more common in small hospitals and communities with a limited obstetric workforce.
- Maternal mortality and morbidity are rising.
- Large racial and ethnic disparities in pregnancy-related mortality continue. African American and American Indian/Alaskan Native patients have a higher risk than white patients.
Our Mission Is Centered Around
Five Key Goals:
